As different devices enter the workplace — from iPads to iPhones, from those employees own to those issued by the employer — the challenge of data management becomes greater. With more data than ever before to have to handle, solution providers are faced with helping customers figure out how to store it all.

Here, Mark Ross, Dolly Drive’s director of client services, offers five ways to deal with the changing environment. (Dolly Drive is an online services provider delivering cloud-based data sharing and storage service for the Mac community.) —Jennifer Bosavage, editor

Dolly Drive, backup, sync, store & clone for Mac, has been selected as a Finalist for Red Herring’s Top 100 Americas award, a prestigious list honoring the year’s most promising private technology ventures from the North American business region.

Read the full PR Web release here

The Red Herring editorial team selected the most innovative companies from a pool of hundreds from across North America. The nominees are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and integration into their respective industries.

Dolly Drive launched at Macworld 2011 by bringing online storage to Apple’s Time Machine backup software combined with a bootable clone for local disaster recovery. The company has since added file sync, share, and storage options to the software application for a complete data access and protection solution for the Mac community. This April, they launched Dock Station, a private cloud network appliance, for small, medium, and enterprise businesses that run on Mac and will be revealing a revolutionary backup platform this summer.

“I thank the Red Herring editorial team for recognizing the hard work and passion that has gone into our cloud productivity suite for Mac users” said Anthony Palermo, creator of Dolly Drive. “We are fortunate to have an incredible team of developers, and an even more phenomenal user community, that have helped us create this complete cloud solution for the Mac ecosystem.”

“This year was very rewarding,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and Chairman of Red Herring. “There are so many great companies producing truly innovative and amazing products and technologies. We had a very difficult time narrowing the field and selecting the Finalists from such a group of future stars. Dolly Drive shows great promise therefore deserves to be on the short list. Now we are faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners.”

Finalists for the 2012 edition of the Red Herring 100 Americas award are selected based upon their technological innovation, management strength, market size, investor record, customer acquisition, and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, hundreds of companies in the, security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, life sciences, cloud, mobile and other sectors completed their submissions to qualify for the award.

The Finalists are asked to present their winning strategies at the Red Herring Americas Forum in Santa Monica, California, May 21-23, 2012. The Top 100 winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony the evening of May 23 at the event.

As we set out for the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas this week, we’re excited to talk with thousands of digital agencies, photographers and filmmakers, and the ITs responsible for them, about their systems for sharing, collaborating and backup. What are they finding that works? What are the challenges?

Someone said something powerful to me recently about backup. He said “if your data doesn’t exist in two places, it doesn’t exist.” And it’s true. Because if it’s only in one place, and it gets lost, it’s gone. Forever. Does not exist.

The most common solution I hear from creatives is that they back up on portable drives and then share their work through Drop Box. If that sounds like you, I applaud you for taking action and using what tools seem available, but think about this: Is the data your company is responsible for truly protected and accessible by you? Are you absolutely sure “it exists”?

It’s a conversation we’re having a ton nowadays with the release of our private cloud Dock Station. And when we explain that it’s basically, whatever you are doing on your Mac, at that moment, is backed up and accessible anytime, anywhere, forever, we get a big reaction.

Because if you’re taking photos, or making films, and you’re collaborating with a team, then you need to make sure that work is not only backed-up, but easily shared. And the easier you make that that task for folks, the easier it is for you to control.

It’s why we love what Apple does. And why people working on Mac love Dolly Drive. Because to paraphrase Apple’s “It just works”, with Dolly Drive, your data “just is”. Whenever you need it. Wherever you need it. Because it’s in 2 places, it exists. And because it’s synced, it exists wherever you are, whenever you need it.

So, we’re hoping to talk about it more at the CirrusThinking/ DollyDrive booth (#N5437) at NAB with creative agencies and content creators. Stop by. Tell us about your system.

We provide support in a number of ways to ensure your seamless use of Dolly Drive’s services

Online via our support forum – this area is found on the website (support.dollydrive.com)

Via direct email to support@dollydrive.com

Via our free Dolly-on-One services

Via our toll free 855GoDolly (855.463.6559 x 2) – if we are all busy, leave a message and it will be returned as soon as possible

Via screen sharing with personal WebEx or iChat sessions for help with any training or support needs

Our Dolly-on-One service is a great way to begin your relationship. It is not needed for everyone and can be requested at any time. It is especially helpful if you need to restore or have a system question – Dolly related or not.

When you connect to support – try to describe what you were doing and include screen shots of any messages that may be visible.

If there are questions about what option to choose for a message – minimize until we connect.

Our video library and knowledge base are good resources for the most common tips.

Most importantly, we love our customers and want to talk to each of you in time!

Support hours – that is a great question! We are available every day and between email, web sharing and our US and EU data centers, we have pretty much all time zones covered. Yes – occasionally we do take a break but know that we will get back to you as soon as possible.

I was in my Dallas office today working with many of you when we had some typical spring weather – a day of tornadoes and hail! (Need some frogs and locusts for the true effect)

As the sky turned black and the sirens started blasting the warnings, I did what we all do, grab the beer, the most important papers and my laptop as I headed downstairs to put some floors between storm and head. Oh - and the dog went with me. Toto he is not.

If anyone has seen today’s news, we had some serious damage. Flying cars, trucks and large Texans went to the clouds like cotton balls. Fortunately, most of the damage was to homes and not humans this time but it was a clear reminder about the real value of the cloud and the service that Dolly Drive provides. (You know I had to take that path….)

Like most Mac users, I am very diligent about backups and versions of my data. Here is where it gets interesting. If I only had a backup to an external drive and a catastrophe hit; today’s tornadoes were a clear reminder that within minutes, your physical world can be heading to the clouds and with it, your data.

Imagine coming up after a severe storm to find that most of your home and belongings are spread over a 2 square mile grid. Sure, I have good external backups but they are somewhere in the next county.

I keep my Time Machine current on our servers with Dolly Drive, I have a current clone and my critical current working files are safely replicated with our Dolly Sync and Dolly Space services.

I can always head to Apple for a shiny new Air but Apple can do little to recover data that has been hanging around with the wrong cloud…..

Come check out what Dolly Drive can do for your peace of mind.
